How to Answer Tough Interview Questions?

Landed an interview for your dream job? Depending on the job profile, extensive interview questions are asked to seek out crucial information about you. However, facing an Interview can be a nerve-racking experience. Interviewer might as tricky interview questions to learn about your personality and thought process.

Open-ended interview questions, such as what motivates you, how would your colleagues describe you, what do you do to deal with stress are asked to understand how you perceive in certain situations. Mock interviews, practicing with friends or colleagues is the best way to be prepared and gain confidence.

Here are some of the tough interview questions that are usually asked during an interview:

1. Tell me something about yourself

Some other versions of the same interview question are “How would you describe yourself?”, “Walk me through your resume” or “Tell me something about yourself that’s not on your resume.” An open-ended interview question like above can throw you off.

A self-swot analysis is a great way to start. List down your qualities that make an excellent fit for the position applied. Match your experience and skills with the job description and how you top the requirements.  How to answer “Tell me about yourself” interview questions:

  • Mention past experience and how they relate to the positions.
  • Explain how your current job relates to the new position.
  • Give examples supporting your strengths and qualities.
  • Briefly share your hobbies, achievements and interests. Always avoid personal details.

2. What’s your biggest weakness?

While it is easy to focus on one’s strength, it is tough to talk about your weaknesses. This question is more focused on self-awareness. To prepare for this interview question:

  • Be aware of the areas you lack in.
  • How you are working towards improving over them.
  • How that improvement add on to you as an employee?

3. Tell me about a time you overcame an obstacle.

This behavioral interview question usually asked to understand how you deal with difficulties. You should answer by providing:

  • Brief about the situation.
  • Your role in the situation.
  • What action you took to resolve the issue and
  • The result or resolution you achieved.

4. What has been your positive and negative management experience?

This particular question helps interviewer analyze your management style. This is an important interview question, especially if you are applying for a managerial position. A quick answer should be:

  • Answered honestly.
  • Tactfully.
  • Explain the comparison between two situations
  • Don’t put anyone in a negative light

5. Why are you leaving your current position?

The key is not to put your current organization negatively. Talk about following without providing any personal details.

  • What you have learned on current job
  • Lack of growth for your particular role in the current situation
  • How the position you applying for will help you reach your career goals

6. Why do you want to work here?

Research about the company thoroughly. Mission, vision, products and leaders of the company. This is a frequently asked interview question for candidates changing job roles.

  • Describe how you relate to the organization’s vision.
  • How you can contribute towards its growth.
  • Talk about something you believe in something like the organization.

7. What’s your greatest achievement?

Employers usually ask this question to understand what you consider as your most significant accomplishment. Talk about something related to your job. Also, briefly explain the achievement, why it is valuable to you personally, and how you achieved it.

8. Where do you see yourself in 3 to five years?

Your willingness to grow and lead is the key to crack this interview question.

  • Be sure and confident about your chosen career path.
  • Self-assess and focus on your long-term goal.
  • Don’t be over-confident.
  • Above all, be honest.

9. Are you willing to fail?

This question is directed towards how you accept failure. So, explain what you will learn from failure and how you will use the experience to do better in future.

10. What are your pet peeves?

This interview question determines if you will be a good fit in the company. It can be a tricky question, but a well-thought answer can put you as a strong candidate.

  • Avoid negativity.
  • Everyone has something that bothers them, don’t say straight NO.
  • Focus on something that annoys you but does not prevent you from doing your job.
