How to Become a Paramedic in Ontario

As a critical part of the healthcare system, primary care paramedics are responsible for preforming pre-hospital emergency and acute patient care, as well as transporting patients to hospitals and other facilities for further medical attention.

Paramedics might have to perform invasive procedures such as injecting pain-relieving drugs, CPR, fluid resuscitation, depending on the situation. Paramedics are critical thinkers, analyzing the situation and performing relevant procedures will make the difference between life and death.

Apart from the technical, medical and administrative skills, working as a paramedic require certain qualities to be able to deal with different situations:

  • Strength: Not only physical, but paramedics need to be strong mentally and emotionally. Broken bones, blood, severed limbs, they have to be prepared for worst scenarios.
  • Calm: The ability to stay calm and make critical decisions in most disastrous situations tests paramedic. Staying focused, treating patients and able to handle immense pressure.
  • Problem-solving skills: Identifying, evaluating problems and providing quick solutions to a problem judges the effectiveness on the job. Diagnosing patients rationally and accurately is must on the job.
  • Physical Fitness: Physical fitness plays a vital role during the course of job. You will have to lift, pull or push patients of all sizes. There is lot of kneeling, bending and sitting involved in this profession.
  • Communication and inter-personal skills: Working in stressful situations, while handling medical procedures takes a lot. Paramedics need to have good inter-personal and instructional skills in order to manage situation confidentially. Keeping patients, relatives or anyone involved in a situation calm is important.
  • Flexibility: Working in unstructured environment, late night-shifts, switching to routine calls to critical care situations. Paramedics need to be flexible enough to handle and merge in situations as per requirements.

As a PCP you may perform some or all of the following duties:

  • Assess extent of injuries or medical illnesses of trauma victims, patients with respiratory disease and distress, overdose and poisoning victims, industrial accident victims and other ill or injured individuals to determine emergency medical treatment;
  • Administer pre-hospital emergency care, such as oxygen therapy, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), spinal immobilization, bandaging and splinting, to patients;
  • Establish and maintain intravenous treatment (IV), apply adjunctive equipment for ventilation and circulation complications, administer medications and provide other advanced emergency treatment to patients;
  • Transport patients by air, land or water to hospital or other medical facility for further medical care;
  • Document and record nature of injuries and illnesses and treatment provided;
  • Assist hospital personnel with provision of medical treatment, if necessary;
  • Maintain ambulances and emergency care equipment and supplies;
  • Participate in continued career training/education and professional development;
  • May assist with triage of emergency patients.
