Subsequently, 36,900 new Personal Support Worker (PSW) jobs are estimated to open up across Canada, through 2024. Average personal support worker hourly pay in Toronto, Ontario is $16.45, however, with experience, you can make $21 per hour.

All PSWs are expected to have basic training in order to graduate. Depending on the overall skills, personal interests and abilities, one can work in specialized fields. Community care, long term home care, palliative care or child care, options are limitless.

Duties and Responsibilities

Your PSW job duties may include:

  • Care for individuals, as well as, patient’s families during periods of incapacitation, convalescence or family disruption,
  • Administer bedside and personal care to clients such as aid in ambulation, bathing, personal hygiene in addition to dressing and undressing,
  • Plan and prepare meals and special diets, as well as feed or assist in feeding clients,
  • May perform routine health-related duties such as changing non-sterile dressings, administering medications and collecting specimens under the general direction of a home care agency supervisor or nurse,
  • Provide elderly and convalescent clients with companionship and personal care in the client’s home, under general direction of a home care agency supervisor or family members.

Students looking to enroll in our Personal Support Worker program must first meet the following requirements:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent OR
  • Mature Student Status (18 years of age or older) AND
  • Successful completion of Entry Assessment Test

Additionally, students need to have following prior to the start of the program:

  • Clean criminal record and vulnerable sector screening checks
  • Immunization record as per the program requirement
