Second Career- Plan Smart for Success

Nov 26, 2019 | BizTalk

Retraining for second career is crucial for a smooth transition into a high-skill, in-demand occupation in drastically changing job market.

Doesn’t matter if you are out of a job, moving to a different sector/industry or returning to work after a long break, the second career is an excellent opportunity to evaluate and upgrade your skill set.

Here is how you can make your second career successful:

  • Analyze Yourself:  Acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses. Then match them to your interest areas and best roles you are likely to take on.  For example, if you enjoy interacting with people and achieving targets, a sales profile will be most suited. Never hesitate from taking a professional career counselling to advance your career.

  • Research about Job opportunities: Don’t plan to fail, you don’t want to choose the second career that has minimal job opportunities. Research job market, learn what employers are looking for. Check out for employment or government labor demand websites. Find information on various industries and jobs that will help you make an informed decision.

  • Plan Ahead: Second career is not meant for a few days. Don’t rush into making a decision overnight or because someone suggested so. Set the goals you are likely to achieve over the next 5-10 years in the chosen domain/career. Consider the pros and cons, financial implications and most importantly, retirement and healthcare options.

  • Invest in Training: Your second career may require a degree, certification or additional skills to match the latest industry requirements. Research what sort of education or training may be required. Your education will set you apart during hiring process. Also, invest your time in practical skills to match the changing industry requirements in the chosen domain. For smooth transition, research extensively and be mentally prepared to go back to school if necessary.

Be ready for a Personal Transition

  • Save Money: Acquire enough savings to support you and your family while you make the transition. Research financial aid options that can assist you to pay off education and living costs. Budget and eliminate some luxuries in your financial spending.

  • Get Experience: Volunteering is a great option to gain relevant experience in a chosen second career. The more knowledge you gain, the more opportunities will come your way. Freelancing is another excellent option in second career. It will help you build enough momentum to support you financially.

  • Start Networking: Join professional associations and organizations in the interested field. Get to know people who work in the industry, many organizations offer mentorship programs that can help you learn from experienced professionals.

Transitioning into something brand new is not a mild decision and may affect your family, be sure to talk about your second career plans with family members and close friends.
