Cyber security and computer networking professionals are needed to analyze systems requirements, develop and implement information systems plans, policies and procedures, in addition to developing and implementing plans to protect networks from malicious activity.

As an information technology professional, specializing in computer networking and cyber security, you may be employed in both the private and public sectors, in a wide range of industries.

Duties and Responsibilities

Working in a cyber security role you will perform some, or all, of the following duties:

  • Installation, configuration and maintenance of PCs, networking equipment and network operating systems.
  • Securing an information technology infrastructure that specifically provides reliable, measurable, consistent, responsive and secure enterprise network services.
  • Concentrating on the network design and security, particularly troubleshooting and/or debugging network-related problems.
  • Deterring as well as preventing cyber-crime that plagues corporations and government agencies; for example, identity and data theft, hacking and invasion of privacy.
  • Guarding vital information systems vigilantly to fight cyber-crime.
  • Handles web and network security exploits, intrusion prevention, network traffic analysis, cryptography and encryption.
  • Maintenance of the network’s authorization infrastructure, as well as network backup systems.
  • Routing protocols and routing table configuration assignment.
  • Configuration of authentication, authorization and directory services.
  • Maintenance of network facilities in individual machines, such as drivers and settings of personal computers as well as printers etc.
  • Maintenance of network servers
